The station signed on April 3, 1955 as an independent station. The station was originally owned by Texoma Broadcasting, a company owned by businessmane Milford M. "Buddy" Bostick alongside KWTX radio (1230 AM and 97.5 FM). In the fall of that same year, the station picked up the ABC affiliation from KANG-TV (channel 34). At the end of that year, KANG-TV was shuttered, this led to Texoma purchasing channel 34's assets and sold a share in KWTX to Texas Broadcasting. At that time, KWTX picked up the CBS affiliation.
