In 1976, KXLY switched its affiliation to ABC, as CBS had terminated its affiliation agreement with the station, citing its impatience of the station constantly preempting its programs. In addition, ABC had by then become the #1 network in America, so they desired a stronger network to affiliate with as well. KREM-TV would inherit the CBS affiliation.
