The Ford Motor Company began producing charcoal briquets as a means of using the scrap wood resulting from the production of automobiles. The product was originally named "Ford Charcoal" and it could be purchased, along with barbeque grills and accessories, at Ford dealerships.

An investment group bought Ford Charcoal in 1951 and renamed it to Kingsford Charcoal in honor of Edward G. Kingsford (and the factory's home-base name) and took over the operations.
