In 1992, Kmart bought 13 state-owned department stores in Czechoslovakia and turned them into Kmart locations; however, in 1993, Czechoslovakia was split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Three years later, all Kmart stores in both countries were sold to Tesco due to their parent company's financial issues despite the former's operations being profitable.
