- This article is about parent company of both Kresge's and Kmart founded in 1899. For Kmart's predecessor, Kresge, which existed from 1899 until 1987, see Kresge's. For the discount store chain that has operated since 1962, see Kmart (United States).
Kmart was created in 1899 as Kresge's (alternatively known as the S.S. Kresge Company).
The S.S. Kresge Company
During this time, two "S.S. KRESGE CO." logos were used.
This is the final S.S. Kresge logo; although the company opened the first Kmart store in 1962, their company name remained the same. Up until 1977, it was used in tandem with the Kmart logo used at the time. In 1977, S.S. Kresge announced that the company would rename itself as Kmart Corporation.

The company's longest lasting logo, in use for over two decades.
This logo was introduced in September 1990, is still seen at many older Kmart stores and on Kmart Express until 2017. On January 22, 2002, Kmart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and closed around 500 stores.
