1946–1980[]
Kohl's was founded in 1946 by Maxwell Kohl, who would establish Kohl's Department Stores sixteen years later. In 1972, British American Tobacco became majority owner of the Kohl Corporation (owner of both Kohl's chains) through US subsidiary Batus, Inc. and expanded both chains.

In 1983, Kohl's 63 food stores were sold by Batus to A&P after a net loss the year prior. In February 2003, A&P put the chain up for sale in hopes of reducing their own debt. The eight locations in Dane County, Wisconsin were sold to Roundy's, seven of which became Copps outlets. After not securing a buyer for the rest, all Kohl's food stores were shut by August.
