La 1 is the flagship channel of Televisión Española, the public Spanish TV broadcaster. It was inaugurated in October 28, 1956 at 6:15 p.m. with only a few hundred televisions watching. It was the only Spanish TV channel for ten years until La 2 was founded in 1966.
On 13 June 1982 at 19:00 (CEST)[1], coinciding with the inauguration of the 1982 FIFA World Cup, TVE-1 updated its logo, consisting on a sphere surrounded by 4 diagonal blocks, forming an eye shape. A new TVE-1 wordmark was also designed, which could be placed below the logo, or inside the sphere (with the TVE logo stacked on top of the 1).
In 1988, TVE-1 began broadcasting internationally to the rest of Europe until the launch of a dedicated international channel in 1989.
1989–1991[]
The wordmark was tweaked in 1989, with the TVE logo becoming gray. On 7 May 1990, the 1982 eye symbol was dropped, leaving only the wordmark.
