The town of Lake Placid, New York, which had been host to the 1932 Olympic Games, was chosen by the United States Olympic Committee to represent the United States. Its bid would officially be submitted to the International Olympic Committee in September 1974, and would be selected the following month after the only other candidate city dropped out.

The raccoon emblem was introduced to the public in November 1977. The name "Roni", derived from the Mohawk word for raccoon, atí:ron, was chosen in September 1979, having been submitted by 12-year-old Tom Golonka of Guilderland, New York as part of a naming contest.
