The first Leggett store opened in Lynchburg, Virginia in November 1927. The founding Leggett brothers began an association with Belk through the opening of Belk-Leggett stores in 1920. After their split, they maintained ties with Belk by continuing to open and operate the Belk-Leggett stores. In 1955, a branch of B-L in Chapel Hill, North Carolina opened, named Belk-Leggett-Horton. This branch would close in 1980.
