Leica (short for Leitz(sche) Camera) is a German camera and lens company headquartered in Wetzlar.

1914–1927[]

After working in some prototypes between 1913 and 1914, Ernst Leitz launched the first camera model known as Leica I in 1927. It was only used in leather cases and in advertisements from that time.

A thinner script began appearing in camera models withe the release of Leica II in 1932. It was last used in the IIIf model

1935–present[]

In 1935, the 1927 script was retouched.

1948–1968, 1983, 2002[]

The design of the script used in cameras was modified in 1954 to match the print logo. It was first seen in the Leica IIIc model and last used in the M4 model, although it was reused for the M4-P and M6-TLL.

1986–present[]

In 1986, the partner company Leitz, adopted the name of its famous brand recycling red circle logo used by the aforementioned company during the 1960s. However, this logo wouldn't be used in cameras models until 1990. In 1997, the company spooned-off two subsidiaries Leica Microsystems and Leica Geosystems.
