Lidl was founded in 1862 as a local fruit wholesaler in Heilbronn, Germany. The original name was Südfrüchte Großhandel Lidl und Co.

1930–1944[]
In 1930, Josef Schwarz became a partner of Lidl & Co. which he soon developed into a general food wholesaler, expanding and rebranding it as Lidl & Schwarz KG. In 1944, the business was destroyed due to the World War II.

In 1973, Dieter Schwarz, Josef Schwarz's son, who founded Schwarz Group, a retailer specialising in discounted supermarkets and wholesale markets, started worked on rebuilding Lidl again.
