In 1998, Lucky's parent American Stores was acquired by Albertsons Companies. All Lucky outlets were rebranded to Albertsons stores by November 1999. SuperValu then acquired most of Albertsons in 2006. That summer, new Lucky-branded outlets began opening in former Albertsons spaces in Southern California. Albertsons was purchased from SuperValu in 2013 by Cerberus Capital Management

Save Mart, who had acquired the Northern California division of Albertsons in 2006 and began operating Lucky stores in the Bay Area in 2007, introduced the Lucky California format with a remodeled store in Daly City on July 8, 2015.
