MTV is Viacom18’s youth entertainment channel. It was launched in 1991 as part of the pan-Asian Star TV bouquet that also consisted of Zee TV, Star Plus, Prime Sports and Star Movies. The joint venture between Viacom and Star expired on 1 May 1994; therefore, Star launched Channel V in India on 23 May. MTV got a dedicated Indian feed in October 1996, and both channels targeted the youth until Channel V closed down in September 2018.

Much like its American counterpart, MTV moved its focus away from Bollywood music in the late 2000s to concentrate on youth-oriented reality shows, most famously Roadies and Splitsvilla, as well as serialised fiction shows (much like the now-defunct Channel V, Star’s music-turned-youth channel). However, it does air some music programmes, such as MTV Unplugged. All programming is in Hindi.

Viacom18 does have a full-fledged Hindi music channel, MTV Beats, which was launched in 2016. There is also a Middle Eastern channel called MTV India.
