The Music Channel
MTV was originally called The Music Channel and its logo was created by Manhattan Design in May 5, 1980.
MTV: Music Television
From its launch on August 1, 1981 until February 8, 2010, the "Music Television" caption was included underneath the logo. Many MTV fans recognize this logo because of its unique design that allows it to become anything.
Since 2008 on the premiere of FNMTV, MTV showed a revised and chopped down version of its traditional logo during most of its on air programming. In October 2009, rumors surfaced about MTV dropping the "Music Television" caption from its logo. This logo became MTV's official brand mark on February 8, 2010, when it debuted on MTV's website, where MTV dropped "Music Television", for the very first time altering the basic structure of the logo. The tagline "Music Television" was eliminated to reflect the network's decrease in music-related programming. Notice that the other lower parts of the logo are removed. Music videos still air on the channel, as part of its early morning AMTV block, which replaced FNMTV in 2009.
Brand New ranked this the 12th worst logo of 2010.
