Federated Department Stores, Inc.[]
1929–2007[]
Macy's, Inc. first began its life as Federated Department Stores. Founded in 1929 by Simon Lazarus, the company was the holding division for the Lazarus, Filene's and A&S chains. Originally headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, the company relocated to Cincinnati in 1945. Through mergers and takeovers it became the second largest retail holding chain in the U.S. In 1994, Federated acquired the Macy's chain and began to slowly consolidate its brands.
