In 1930, the Toronto Maple Leafs managing director Conn Smythe decided that their existing arena ("Arena Gardens") was too small, and he wanted to build a new arena, which would become Maple Leaf Gardens. To finance the arena construction, Smythe launched Maple Leaf Gardens Limited (MLGL), a management company that would own the arena and the Maple Leafs.
