In 1979, the struggling parent company Fishman-Mason was acquired by Schottenstein Stores, Inc., owner of Value City. Plans were made to integrate the Mason's chain with Value City but this plan was aborted, with most stores either being shuttered and sold or remodeled to Value City outright.
