1983–1996[]

Metallica 1983

This logo was designed by James Hetfield and it was used from Kill 'Em All (1983) to Metallica (1991). It also had a 3D variant being used on Ride The LightningMaster of Puppets and Metallica (1991). This logo is currently used as a secondary for merch and licensed clothing.

1996–2003[]

This was first used on the single cover for 1996’s “Until It Sleeps”, and the album which contained it Load. It last appeared on the single cover of 2000’s I Disappear.

2003–2008[]

Launched:  June 5, 2003

This logo was used during the St. Anger era, yet didn't appear on its standard album cover (some special editions include it). Later it appeared on their release of The Videos 1989–2004 (2006).

2008–present[]

Metallica logo

Typography:  Futura Extra Black (modified)
Launched:  August 21, 2008

This logo was designed by Turner Duckworth and first saw use on the cover of the "The Day That Never Comes" single. It then appeared on their 2008 album, Death Magnetic, and has remained in use since. A glitched variant was introduced for use on their album Hardwired... To Self-Destruct (2016).
