In 1997, Monsanto spun off its chemical and biotechnology sectors, which became Solutia.

In 2000, Monsanto was absorbed into Pharmacia. Promptly after the acquisition, Monsanto’s former agriculture division was spun off into a new company: Monsanto, Inc. This iteration of the company primarily dealt in genetically modified crops and seeds. In 2018, it was acquired by Bayer, who retired the name.
