"Wards" wordmark seen in the "You'll love Wards" tagline (1968–1969)
This logo was designed by William “Bill” Farr, art director for Montgomery Ward until 1985, and designer of the Inverserif typeface. The first new store to open with this signage was the North Valley Shopping Center location in Thornton, Colorado. Its sign was first illuminated on January 30, 1969.
The adoption of this logo coincided with the merger of Montgomery Ward Co. and Container Corporation of America into a new parent holding company, Marcor. Marcor was purchased in 1976 by Mobil, who later sold CCA in 1986 and spun off Montgomery Ward as an independent company in 1988.
