Monumental Sports Network was launched in 1984 as Home Team Sports, and was originally owned by Westinghouse Broadcasting. 11 years later, when Westinghouse merged with CBS, it was become a part of newly-launched CBS Cable along with its sister channel Midwest Sports Channel (MSC), which also an regional sports network based in Minnesota. In 2000, CBS Corporation was merged with Viacom. Months after the deal was finalized, both HTS and MSC were sold to Comcast and News Corporation respectively.

On September 20, 2022, NBC Sports Washington was acquired by Monumental Sports. Following this, on June 21, 2023, it was announced that the network would rebrand as the Monumental Sports Network that September. The new name and branding took effect on-air on September 12, though it was not announced officially until September 20.
