Pitch Black (first era)[]
2004[]

Pitch Black was initially released for a limited time during the 2004 Halloween season. As a successful flavor, it returned in a Slurpee format for a limited time in fall 2006.
Pitch Black II[]
2005[]

Pitch Black returned as Pitch Black II for a limited time during the 2005 Halloween season. This version had a sour grape flavor. Unfortunately, this version was a marketing failure and did not return to the markets in any form.
Pitch Black (second era)[]
2011-2017[]
In 2011, the original Pitch Black flavor returned as part of the Back by Popular DEWmand promotion, and also became available in some other countries.
In 2016, after the end of DEWcison 2016, Mountain Dew Pitch Black won against Mountain Dew Baja Blast, with a total 5,789,284 million votes. It was also available in fountains at Speedway gas stations in 2016, but was later replaced by Cyclone in 2019. As of 2018, select Sheetz locations still carry Pitch Black as a fountain drink permanently.
2017-2021[]
As part of a rebranding effort, Pitch Black had to change it's logo.
Pitch Black was discontinued in 2019 in most regions of the United States due to underperforming sales. Independent Pepsi bottlers still produced the drink all the way through 2021, although production was sporadic.
2023-present[]
On December 29th, 2022, the official Mountain Dew Twitter page announced the return of Pitch Black for a limited time on January 16th, 2023. With the release, two new variants were introduced, Zero Sugar and Energy. In 2024, it became an exclusive flavor in Seven-Eleven and Speedway.
