Movie Extra launched on 7 September 1997. The channel showed a mix of international and Australian films along with premieres of more controversial films and documentaries.

On the 31st December 2012, Movie Extra and Movie Network Channels were closed. They and Showtime Movie Channels were replaced by Foxtel Movies, which launched the next day.
