Mr. Pibb was first test marketed by The Coca-Cola Company in Texas and Mississippi in June 1972. A sugar free variety was introduced in late 1973.

Following Keurig Dr Pepper winning a lawsuit in California in which it could distribute its own beverages independently of a Coca-Cola bottler, Coca-Cola moved to reposition Pibb Xtra as a competitor by changing its formula again and reintroducing the Mr. Pibb name. It carries stylistic influences from the 1972 and 1991 logos.
