NTV.ru was launched in August 28th, 2000 (a week before the expected launch) due to the fire of Ostankino Tower, which happened a day before.

Even though the NTV's ownership went to Gazprom-Media in April 2001, NTV.ru was still owned by the old owner of the channel, Vladimir Gusinsky. NTV.ru later started redirecting to the new domain, NTVru.com

The ownership of the web domain was given to Gazprom in November 2002 after the the original website moved to NEWSru.com in October.

On May 31st, 2021, the Russian version of Newsru became defunct because of political and financial problems.
