Fox wanted the NFL to help their network because it believed that sports like professional football would be the most effective way for them to compete with the big three television networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) as it was experiencing a ratings decline. On December 17, 1993, the NFL chose Fox's bid for the NFC package, thus shutting CBS out of the NFL for the first time since 1956 (it would return in 1998 with the AFC package). The NFL on Fox made its debut broadcast on August 12, 1994.
