On April 19, 2023, NHK announced that the BS1 and BS Premium channels are to be merged and renamed to simply NHK BS alongside the renaming of it's 4K channel to NHK BS Premium 4K.[1] These changes took effect on December 1, 2023.
Initially, the channel would shutdown on March 31, 2024, with programming ending one day later. But on January 9, 2024, the public broadcaster announced it would use the channel space to simulcast the Kanazawa (Ishikawa) opt-out of NHK General TV, for the time being, a few days after the Noto Peninsula earthquake (which occurred on New Year's Day 2024).[2] During that period, the BSP branding isn't used at all times.
The channel completely closed down at exactly 12:00am JST on July 1, 2024.[3]
