NHK紅白歌合戦, translated as NHK Red and White Song Battle, more commonly known simply as Kōhaku, is an annual New Year's Eve song contest show produced by Japanese public broadcaster NHK since 1951. It is broadcast live on the NHK network both radio and television nationally, plus internationally and some overseas by pay television broadcasters. The show ends shortly before midnight. Before the show began broadcasting on television in the 4th edition (December 31, 1953), the first three edtitions were held on January 3rd and only consisted of a radio broadcast.
