In early 2021, ESPN was announced to pick up NHL broadcasts once again, sharing major 2021–22 season games with WarnerMedia networks. The first game was the Pittsburgh Penguins visiting the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena, the same latter team and venue as ESPN's final NHL game, as they won the championship in 2004.
