NOS is one of the broadcasting organizations making up the Netherlands Public Broadcasting system. It has a special statutory obligation to make news and sports programs for the three Dutch public television channels and the Dutch public radio services. The Dutch government funded this organization through the merger of two broadcasting organizations between NTS and NRU.

On 17 December 2005, the NOS received a new logo for the first time since 1968 after undergoing a major restructuring. Along with this new logo, the broadcast studios were also redesigned, including a new sets of graphics and titles for its programs like NOS Journaal. There was a later redesign in May 2012.
The new logo and identity were designed by Lambie-Nairn. At the centre of the logo is a red ring that serves as “the hub of 360-degree reportage”, according to Lambie-Nairn.
