NOS is one of the three main telecommunications companies in Portugal, along with MEO (owned by Altice Portugal) and Vodafone. It was formed in 2013 as Zon Optimus from the merger of Optimus, a mobile network operator, with ZON TV, a cable TV provider, and rebranded to NOS in May 2014. It also owns the Cinemas NOS movie theatre chain. In addition, it operates and several pay-TV channels under the TVCine brand, as well as Dreamia, a joint venture with AMC Networks International.

One year after the merger, the company changed its name to NOS, meaning Us in Portuguese. Its subsidiares similarly adopted this identity around the same time. NOS opened its headquarters near Estádio José Alvalade XXI, Sporting CP's stadium. Azo Sans is the corporate typeface used in all applications.
