NTL was originally founded as CableTel in 1993. It acquired National Transcommunications Limited (NTL), the Independent Broadcasting Authority transmission-network in 1996 and then adopted NTL as its new name in 1998.

Basten Greenhill Andrews rebranded NTL's identity in 1999. The initials were made lowercase with a colon now suffixed to them, as a message to “watch this space”.
