Network Solutions was founded in Northern Virginia in 1979 and went on to become the company that pioneered the development of registering Web addresses ending in .com, .net, .org and .edu. Initially, the company operated as a technology consulting company focusing on applications development.

In 1984, the company registered a new image mark that depicted a stacked Network Solutions name beneath a diamond pattern of nine smaller diamonds. A horizontal version of the logo was registered in 1996, with the diamond pattern to the left and the inclusion of a shadow.
It was in September 1991 that Network Solutions would be sub-contracted by the U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) to manage the Domain Name System (DNS) which was the registry of domain names for .com, .net, .org, and .edu. The company was the first and only domain name registrar until 1999, when the service was opened to competition.

In late 1997, Network Solutions rebranded with a new logo that depicted two blue gears in a yellow circle that resemble a globe. In 1998, Network Solutions added the slogan "The Dot Com People" and officially registered the initialized mark, NSI.

Network Solutions was acquired by VeriSign, a company that quickly became the leader in Internet infrastructure, so a new slogan ("A VeriSign Company") was used to signal this change in ownership.

In 2003, Network Solutions rebranded after the company. The gear globe logo was dropped along with the space in the company name and a new color scheme was introduced. The text is now displayed with capitalized words and very tight letter spacing, with the "solutions" part being highlighted in green.
2005-2009[]

In September 2005, the company revised their logo to introduce a new font, increase the letter spacing and reduce the overall weight of the text. The color scheme remained the same with the "solutions" part of the name highlighted in green.
2009-present[]

2009 brought a new branding opportunity. The capitalization of the text was removed and colors reversed, now highlighting the "network" part of the name. A new image logo was added, as well, with a white ribbon spelling out "NS" against a square field of green. The square is rounded off on opposite corners and is often shown with a radial gradient from the top.

By 2013, the NS graphic was dropped from the primary logo and the color scheme was revised to a darker and more vivid green and gray. The NS graphic is still being used in some iconography, but it no longer features the ribbon text, instead opting for the NS displayed in the same font as the full name.
