On September 30, 2009, Nickelodeon was taken off the air in Japan due to declining viewership. However, after the channel's closure, some of its programs were moved to MTV, other Japanese pay television channels and terrestrial and broadcast satellite broadcasters.

Beginning on September 1, 2010, Nickelodeon's programs were broadcast on Animax under a television block titled "NickTime".

Despite the channel's closure, the official website still remained online.

On January 30, 2018, Nickelodeon was revived as a channel on dTV after almost 10 years of absence with Hulu and Prime Video adding the library that same year.

On January 31, 2022, the second incarnation of Nickelodeon shuttered once again. However, the VOD library remained on Prime Video until its conversion into a Paramount+ hub in 2024.
