Nightline began on November 8, 1979 as The Iran Crisis: America Held Hostage, a late-night update on the Iran Hostage Crisis that began four days earlier and was anchored by World News Tonight anchor Frank Reynolds.

On March 24, 1980, the broadcast was renamed Nightline to allow for broadcasts covering other topics; while Reynolds was relieved by ABC chief diplomatic correspondent Ted Koppel, who hosted the series for the next 25 years.
