NWS-9 Adelaide began transmission on 5 September 1959. The callsign stood for The NeWs South Australia. It was owned by News Limited through Southern Television Corporation Ltd who also owned city newspaper The News.

In 1999, the Lamb family sell NWS-9 to Southern Cross Broadcasting, leading to redundancies among almost half the station's staff.

On 30 May 2007, Southern Cross Broadcasting announced the sale of NWS to WIN Corporation, with WIN taking control on 1 July.

The dots didn't return in Adelaide or in Perth due to being owned by WIN Corporation during 2007.

Nine Entertainment Co. gain control of NWS-9 on 1 July 2013 after purchasing it from WIN Corporation as part of a deal to secure international cricket rights.
