NTD-8 Darwin began transmission on 11 November 1971. The callsign stood for Northern Territory Darwin.
Following Cyclone Tracy on 24 December 1974, NTD-8 Darwin was off-air for 10 months. On 27 October 1975, the station re-opened with full colour.
On New Year's Day 2003, Channel Eight Darwin became Nine Darwin, in line with the rest of Kerry Packer's Nine Network owned-and-operated stations. In 2005, the affiliation rights with Network Ten were relinquished and were taken up by Southern Cross Darwin (now Seven Darwin).
