Norelco is the American brand name for electric shavers and other personal care products made by the Consumer Lifestyle division of Philips. The name was used because the Philco company was able to prevent Philips from using its name for a variety of products within the United States. Prior to 1981, Philips also marketed a variety of other electrical and electronic products, such as professional television and video cameras using the Norelco name. In 1981, Philips bought the Philco brand name and was able to market Philips-branded products within the United States. The Norelco name continues to be used because of brand recognition in the U.S.
