Prior to the franchise being awarded to a private operator, the company continued to be operated by British Rail.

In February 1997, the franchise was awarded to National Express.

Initially retaining the pre-privatisation name North London Railways, National Express rebranded the company Silverlink in September 1997.

In 2007, the North London franchise was disbanded. The routes were split between the West Midlands franchise and the London Overground.
