The Noxzema Chemical Company was founded in 1917 by Maryland doctor Francis J. Townsend to manufacture and market his Noxzema skin cleanser. In 1961 it introduced the CoverGirl makeup brand.
‘On May 24, 1966, stockholders voted to change the Noxzema firm’s name to Noxell Corporation. In 1989, it was purchased by Procter & Gamble. The former flagship product of the company, Noxzema, was sold to Alberto-Culver in 2008, who themselves were purchased by Unilever less than two years later. The company still exists as a division of P&G, albeit solely as a manufacturer for their cosmetics division, producing CoverGirl, Max Factor, and Olay products. Because of the company’s small footprint, it is unknown whether the original Noxell logo is still in use.
