On June 18, 2023, OceanGate's submersible Titan went missing carrying five occupants during a voyage to the wreck of the Titanic. This triggered the launch of an international search and rescue operation, and on June 22, 2023, it was determined that the submersible had imploded after the wreckage of sub was found on the seabed 500 meters from the Titanic wreck site. Among the five people on board was OceanGate CEO and founder Stockton Rush, who was killed in the implosion. Shortly after it was confirmed that the sub had imploded, the company ceased all operations and closed indefinitely, including ceasing the operations of their tourism and commercial expeditions arm, OceanGate Expeditions, and their philanthropic arm, the OceanGate Foundation.
