The Oculus Quest was released on May 21, 2019 and production was discontinued in September 2020, and on January 15, 2023, software support was announced to begin being phased out that year, with the original Quest to be losing social features in March of that year, and security patches and maintenance being halted the following year.
It was succeeded by the Oculus Quest 2, later known as the Meta Quest 2, on September 16, 2020.

Following the release of the Quest 2, Facebook Inc. would rebrand into Meta, with the Oculus Quest 2 being renamed to the Meta Quest 2 in 2022, and the original Oculus Quest earning the alternative name "Meta Quest" the same year. The Meta Quest logo would be used alongside the original Oculus Quest logo for the system's remaining timeline for support. The Oculus Quest would also be officially referred to as "Quest 1" in official newsletters from Meta.
