The oneworld airline alliance was founded by American Airlines, British Airways, Canadian Airlines (acquired by Air Canada in 1999, defunct in 2001), Cathay Pacific Airways and Qantas Airways in 1999. The alliance primarily competes with the Star Alliance and SkyTeam. It holds 13 full members and one connect partner, Fiji Airways.

Royal Air Maroc will join the alliance in mid-2020 as its first African member, and Alaska Airlines will follow in 2021.
