In 2013, Ooredoo was one of two successful applicants to be awarded a licence to operate in Myanmar, the other being Telenor of Norway, thus breaking the monopoly of the state-owned MPT. Ooredoo received its licence in January 2014, starting operations later that year along with Telenor (Myanmar).
Later, in 2018, a fourth telecom operator, Mytel, was launched by Viettel of Vietnam.
