PBS NewsHour began producing weekend editions as PBS NewsHour Weekend on September 7, 2013. Despite of the new theme song in 2015, the program continued to use the music for the program until August 29, 2015.

On August 29, 2015, PBS NewsHour Weekend introduced an overhauled visual appearance (one month after the graphics changed in the weekday edition) which heavily incorporates PBS' longtime "Everyman" logo, and a newly reorchestration of the show's theme song by theme music composer Edd Kalehoff (originally composed by Bernard Hoffer).

On April 2, 2022 (after NewsHour Productions transferred the program from WNET in a move to streamline the program's production and news-gathering resources), PBS NewsHour Weekend renamed to a new title as PBS News Weekend.

On June 15, 2024, PBS News Weekend debuted a new logo and graphics package incorporating the 2019 "P-Head" design coinciding with the introduction of new sets for the NewsHour's weekday broadcasts as well as Washington Week.[10]
