Panera Bread was started by the then-Au Bon Pain-owned Saint Louis Bread Co. in December 1997. This name was given to locations slated to open in markets further out than the Midwest, and uses a modified version of the Saint Louis Bread logo. As the chain has expanded, the Panera name has completely replaced the other in every market besides the St. Louis Metro area.

This was still used as a secondary into the 2020s, as it remained on bags and cup containers for a few years. This can still be seen on signage at many locations.
