The initial trademarks for this logo were filed on March 16, 2006. On February 14, 2019, Payless ShoeSource announced that they had filed for bankruptcy and will close all of their stores in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Their international stores remained open and still use this logo.

On August 18, 2020, Payless ShoeSource re-emerged from bankruptcy and announced that they would be reopening some stores in the US. They dropped the 'ShoeSource' part from their name and logo, now simply being called Payless (although their international stores are still called 'Payless ShoeSource').
The first US Payless store that was reopened is in Miami, where their new headquarters are located. New stores were scheduled to open in November 2020, which then got delayed to December, and after no other updates since then, Payless soon confirmed that their new store would open on March 1, 2021.
