1921-1925[]

Originally named Pep Auto Supply Co., Pep Boys was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1921 by Emanuel "Manny" Rosenfeld, Maurice "Moe" Strauss, W. Graham "Jack" Jackson, and Moe Radavitz.

1925-1926[]

Launched:  1925

In 1925, the company was renamed as "Pep Boys" and the brand new newly-made caricatures of Emanuel "Manny" Rosenfeld (complete with cigar, which was removed from the logo in 1990), Maurice L. "Moe" Strauss and W. Graham "Jack" Jackson (the latter of which was later replaced by Moe's brother, Izzy, the following year, after Jackson left the business), were created.

1925–1926[]

1926-present[]

This logo is similar to the previous one, except the caricature of the departing W. Graham "Jack" Jackson was replaced with one of Moe's brother, I.M. "Izzy" Strauss. Despite Izzy replacing Jack, the three caricatures are still collectively named "Manny, Moe & Jack" to this day.

Launched:  November 18, 1990

A new logo for Pep Boys was unveiled in November 1990. The trademark cigar in Manny's mouth was noticeably removed. This logo was still used on the back of receipts for a period of time after the next logo was introduced. As of 2022, this is still used at some locations.

Pep Boys Auto[]

2004–2013[]

Designer:  Unknown
Typography:  Univers
Launched:  June 4, 2004

On June 4, 2004,[a] Pep Boys was relaunched as Pep Boys Auto. This move came as the auto parts chain had remodeled 2 of its San Diego stores, as well as planned to grand reopen its 5 Jacksonville, FL locations, which would happen later on June 17, in addition to success from the introduction of new aisles within its stories. During that time, Pep Boys had planned to renovate its then-595 stores within the next 3 years.[1]

This overhaul came as the chain was planning to make its stores look more "appealing", and to provide a more convenient shopping experience, from the introduction of new shopping carts to the division of the parts counters into smaller "pods". Big Red Rooster of Columbus, OH was behind the majority of the stores' overhaul.[2]

As of 2022, most stores still use this logo.

“The remodeled stores have been re-merchandized with more impactful product displays that leverage Pep Boys’ massive retail space, maximize sales per square foot, and create a permanent space for exciting new product categories including transportation and garage.”
Hal Smith, then-Pep Boys executive vice president of merchandising and marketing

Pep Boys (second era)[]

2010–2013[]

Designer:  Unknown
Typography:  Unknown
Launched:  2010

In 2010, Pep Boys Auto was shortened back to just Pep Boys, and introduced the tagline "Does Everything. For Less." However, this was exclusive to promotional material and its website, as the previous logo was still used on stores and as a corporate logo.

2013–2021[]

Designer:  Unknown
Typography:  Magneto (modified)
Launched:  July 2013

In mid-July 2013, the Pep Boys logo received its first dramatic overhaul in over 9 years. The "Manny, Moe & Jack" motif was kept from the previous logo, but the wordmark is now in 1950's-esque lettering, along with a red line added underneath it (a la the 1989-2004 Marshalls logo). This logo was used in tandem with the previous one for a week after its introduction before fully replacing it, and over time has since began to replace the previous one at its existing stores, and is used at newly opened stores.

2021-present[]

When Pep Boys split its Parts and Auto Service & Repair sectors into two in 2021, selling the former to Advance Auto Parts (possibly due to the COVID-19 pandemic), they updated their logo, removing the Manny, Moe & Jack faces altogether. It is currently unknown when Manny, Moe & Jack will come back to the logo if at all.
