The Philips shield with the stars and waves was designed by Dutch architect Louis Kalff (1897–1976), who said that the emblem had been created as a coincidence as he did not know how a radio system worked.
In 1991, the company's name was changed from N.V. Philips Gloeilampenfabrieken to Philips Electronics N.V, to make the company more global and to emphasize that Philips made products other than lighting..
In 1997, the company officers decided to move the headquarters from Eindhoven to Amsterdam along with the corporate name change to Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. adding its royal title, the latter of which was finalized on 16 March 1998.
In 2004, Philips abandoned the slogan "Let's make things better" in favor of a new one: "Sense and Simplicity".
Despite the logo was changed in 2008, it was still used for Philips Records.

This acted as a transition logo of sorts before the new shield was introduced five years later.
In 2013, Philips removed the word "Electronics" from its name – becoming Royal Philips N.V. On 13 November 2013, Philips unveiled its new slogan "Innovation and You", and a new design of its shield mark, with two waves instead of three. The new brand positioning is cited by Philips to signify the company's evolution and emphasize that innovation is only meaningful if it is based on an understanding of people's needs and desires.
