Bravo! launched in July 1979 as a nighttime-only premium channel devoted to adult-oriented PG and R-rated films. The following year, Bravo! was purchased by Rainbow Media, operated at the time by Cablevision.

Bravo! became Escapade in 1980, with Rainbow carrying the former name over to a new network carrying arts and entertainment programming. Escapade's logo features that of its newly-renamed parent.
